Song Innards -- A Look Inside: Faster Than The Speed Of Drunk

The title “Faster Than The Speed Of Drunk” originally came from some drunken inside joke that no one in the band remembers the details of. We were on a road trip to play an out of town show and someone drunkenly wrote it on the ceiling of the van.

We later named our 2006 nationwide tour with the Teenage Harlets the “Faster Than The Speed Of Drunk” tour which turned out to be appropriate as anyone who has ever tried to keep up with the Harlets' consumption of alcohol would know. We decided to use it as the name of our next full length CD as well.

The inspiration for the actual Faster Than The Speed Of Drunk song can be explained in two words: Helper Monkeys. I was wracking my brain trying to come up with cool songs for our new CD and I was having a bit of writers block. I was at a Helper Monkeys show one night, listening to their songs about drinking beer and smoking pot and just being themselves and I realized that I wanted a song like that. An unapologetic, hard rocking, this-is who-we-are-so-fuck-you-if-you-don't-like-it song. I wanted a song that made you feel like partying all out with no excuses.

I was determined to write that kind of song, so one night I went out to the True Love Coffee House (my house is way too distracting to try and write songs in) with my notebooks, determined not to leave until I finished the song. I thought about how to translate that kind of rogue rocknroll spirit to a Secretions song. I thought of all the crazy rocknroll things we do: “Let's see, drinking Jack Daniels, smoking cigarettes, partying all night, going on tour, playing shows, partying with our friends...” I put all those in the song and it worked out.

I was doing great, coming up with some great rhymes, and then I got stuck. I came up with the line “We're gonna rock punk across the nation” and I couldn't think of anything appropriate to rhyme with it. I'm one of those rhyming songwriters, it's hard for me to not write rhyming songs. I went through all the rhymes I could think of: “Let's see.... nation, station, vacation, Haitian, masturbation, summation.....wait, that's it!” I realized that we were planning a tour for the summer with our long time buddies in Final Summation, so I might as well make it the theme song for the tour, and that's where the line “with our good friends from Final Summation” came from.

That's pretty much it, a simple short story for a simple balls-out rockin' song.
