02/18/08 Mickie Rat at True Love

Last Monday, Mickie played at True Love with two singer/songwriters from England, Chris T-T and Frank Turner. I'll be honest, when I hear the term "singer/songwriter" or hear someone classify themselves as "folk", I become VERY skeptical because it generally means I'm in for something I'm not going to like. Luckily, this was not the case.

The show took place in the new space above True Love in Midtown, Sacramento. It isn't a huge space, but Kevin has certainly made the most of it. The only draw-back? It's up a giant steep flight of stairs. Somehow I was able to make it up the stairs, dragging my broken foot behind me, and enjoy the show.

Mickie opened and broke his G string (heh heh heh - couldn't resist) on literally the first chord he played. Which is total crap because he had JUST restrung his guitar a few days earlier. Chris and Frank didn't have any spare G strings lying around, so there was no G spotting to be had. Luckily, Eoin was in the neighborhood and saved the day by loaning Mickie his guitar (as you can see in the picture). I'm also going to take this opportunity to apologize for the excessive G string and G spot related jokes...I'm sorry (no, I'm not).

After Mickie had adjusted to playing a different guitar, he did wonderfully and everyone seemed to love him, no surprises here. I could tell he was really embarrassed for having broken a string and not having a spare on him.

He couldn't feel too bad though, because Chris T-T broke a string about three songs in. He performed one song without the aid of a guitar, then did a few more with Frank Turner playing guitar for him. Apparently they had never actually played or sang together, but you wouldn't have known that by watching them - they were excellent. After a few songs, Chris took a seat and Frank took over.

Frank was fantastic because he was so pissed off. You wouldn't think it by looking at him, but he was actually pretty fucking punk rock in the most sincere sort of way.

If you missed this show, you really missed out. Check out Chris and Frank's myspaces and send them some love.
